Really Right Stuff Modular Pano Equipment

Back to Panorama Hardware Overview

Really Right StuffRRS produces various parts that can be combined to Panorama Heads with different functions. The base of all combinations is a panning base (PCL-1) with integrated Arca style clamp and bubble level, which can be mounted on 1/4 or 3/8 inch threads. The panning base has no click stops.

Several types of sliders are available to mount the camera in the right position.

The Really Right Stuff Pro Omni Pivot package allows full spherical panoramas.

The package contains two Panning clamps to allow two axis rotation, 2 rails, and a Nodal slider. A dedicated camera plate is needed to mount the camera.

The Pro Omni package (without camera plate) costs US$ 800

Excellent system. This has little flex at all and mounted on the bh55 ballhead creates a solid, flexible (if expensive) panorama system.

I have used the Manfrotto system and the Kaidan Quick Pan IV, and although both worked fairly well, there were always alignment problems caused by metal flex (bending from the weight of the camera) which needed work in Photoshop. I recently aquired the Really Right Stuff multi row system and it solved all alignment problems. The RRS anodized aluminum parts are unbendable with the weight of any camera and lens combination you would use for panoramic photography. I use a Nikon D200 with the battery grip with no flexing at all. Once it is levelled, it stays that way. The only problem is that there are no click-stops for precise stepping of shots. I solved that by mounting the bracket on top of a Manfrotto 303 pano rotator (which I already had from my Manfrotto setup) and the whole thing is on top of a Kaidan leveling base (which I had from the Kaidan bracket). I bellieve this is the optimum setup for panoramic digital photography. It is rock-steady. By far, it is the strongest and most stable pano setup I have seen. It may be pricey, but you get what you pay for, and I have seen some pretty shakey setups. I was on a beach one day and actually saw four other people with pano brackets. I think I generated two orders for RRS brackets after they saw what I was using and how well it worked. By the way, I sold the parts from the other two pano brackets, and it payed for the RRS setup).
