Sun- extrem light & shadows

Postby mhc1 on Mon Aug 14, 2006 11:45 pm

hi,
I´ve seen a lots of splendid panos with the sun within an a lots aof shadows /mid-tones just right set.
Wonder how to do: how much underexposure in the sun and : keep this through the set (4 @90)? At least that´s how I do it right now.
Lighten the shadows up afterward gives unfortunately a lot of noise.

Would it be advisable to underexpose ONLY the image with the sun within and keep the rest right exposed ?

Anyone an practicable advice ?

Mike,

In relatively simple situations like you described (sun is the brightest spot, no clowds) a make extra shot with sun and use it to patch shot with 'normal' exposure.

sun ..

Andrey:
thanks for the reply.

This would be an issue to test next time.
But to create a blue skay through your pano, all images have to be -2-3 ebv.
Th sun doesn not only effect a little spot - it´s a wide area.
A sample of mine:
Easy to make:

more hazzles:

If I interpret you right: take all shot right exposed and correct the sun later - that was what I am thinking too.
The noise in the shadows really get remarkable now in some images.

Yes, Mike, you got me right.

One more thought - fix problematic areas before stitching final pano, it helps to avoide much more intrusive (on my point of view) variations of the sky brightness as on your second sample.

Or you can try to make PTGui project using all source images, including underexposured one, but make two renders: one with blended output from 'normally' exposured shots and the second one with layered output using all source images. than drag layer with underexposed image on the blended pano and mask with PS.

Blending...

Postby mhc1 on Sun Aug 20, 2006 11:44 am

Andrey:
that´s is just how I think the best would be:

1. tak a RAW
2. create the imges +++ to ---
3. blend them in Photomatix (or equiv)
4. proceed with pano.

or:
1. create a +++ pano
2. create a --- pano
3. create a 0 pano
4. blend these with Photomatix (or equiv)

It´s a lot more work than taking a --- set, correct images with SHO an stitch though.

What would be the best way ????
A bad example:
http://www.netzserver1.de/pg8/fullscreen.php?pano=20&region=Weddingstedt&version=Fullscreen&playerinfo=Fullscreen&sent=&suche=

Sometimes the technic works out well. But theses images are very noise, even Nois Ninja could not remove it without "waxing" the image. An still some parts overexposed.
The noise-part had beed nearly black in the original image !
So if you the the original and the pano ist´s still a massive enhancement though.
Theses images look better:
http://www.netzserver1.de/pg8/index.php?pano=26&region=Wattstock&version=Quicktime
But the dark parts where kept dark and Neat Image did the work.

What would you suggest ??
Ciao
