Sigma 15mm 2.8 vs Carl Zeiss F-Distagon 16mm 2.8

Sigma 15mm 2.8 vs Carl Zeiss F-Distagon 16mm 2.8

Postby Bert on Sat Jun 10, 2006 7:58 am

A few months ago I started of with a EOS 350D and a 8mm Sigma, but already soon after that I added a EOS 5D and a Sigma 15mm, because I wanted to have sharper and larger panoramas. (and the Full Frame stitches easier, I think)

Allthough the 5D and the Sigma can make very nice, large Panoramas, the Nikon 10.5mm is suppose to be a much better lens then both the Sigma and Canon 15mm.

Unfortunately there is no 15mm Full Frame Fish Eye Nikon and the Nikon 10.5 gives a lower resolution on the Canon 5D. Canon does not have a L type 15mm either.

Then I saw someone on the Panotools offering a 16mm Carl Zeiss F-Distagon 2.8 and thought this is my chance!.

I asked around, and when Hans Nyberg told me that this was the Rolls Royce of the Fish Eye lenses, Luca Vascon told me it was better then both Sigma 15mm and Canon 15mm I simply had to have that lens.

Today the Carl Zeiss arrived, and fortunately the 5D didn't have any mirror problems with the adapter.

The adpater does not put the lens in the right position however, its rotated about 20 degrees clockwise, so the sun shades are in the way, and visible on the picture :( I didn't mask them, so in the Zeiss Pano there are some funny blue spots where the shades are)

Also the adapter has an infinity focus problem :(

I made some shots with F8 on allmost infinity, but its not perfect I am afraid, at least I hope... (Sigma also at F8 )

Here are some 100% crops. Shot made in Raw and converted with Adobe Raw, corrected for chromatic abberation, and otherwise the same settings...

The panos below were stitched with PTGui (8bit 7000x3500), and converted to Quicktime by Pano2QTVR at a compression of 45%

The Carl Zeiss version has a few stitching errors ...

Both were made with the same 360P head...

Each about 2000kb

Hi Bert,

First of all - great work with 360rage!
I hope very much this resource will get support from panotool.info members. It got mine already :)

Regarding the Sigma|Zeiss.

To me Zeiss performs just slightly better. Actually the difference is almos negligible - in the terms of sharpness and contrast. Sigma has less problems with flare :)

I like an idea to get 5D more and more - the DR is great!

Could you please publish Sigma pano in it's original resolution?

BR,
Andrey

Well,

I asked some questions about the lens on the Fred Miranda forums:

Its a Rollei mount...

I admit that Rollei made great lens, but in my eyes the advantage is very small, not worth all these troubles with wrong adaptors.

maybe I change my opinion after you show the real potential of the lens with proper adaptor ;)

I always forget to ask you about 360p that you use - does 360precision make the upgrade kit for 5D+Sigma 15 combo?

Yes they do....

Unfortunately 360precision seems to have a bit of "client relations" problem at the moment, I hear many people complaining.... Emails don't get answered, wrong parts or not fitting parts are shipped....

My bolts of the 360P are rusting, they promised me months ago to send some replacements, including with a replacement arm for the not fitting 5D upgrade I got (made it work with an extra ring), but didn't hear from them since :( Oh Yes, promises, but thats all.....

----

I hope I can get the right ring for the Rollei Distagon.....

In the mean time I ordered a Nikon 10.5 and a Elefoto Nikon adapter...

Will post some pics as soon as I got it...

Hope the nodal point is not to far of the Sigma's I have... So I can use it with the 360P....

I can use the Sigma 8mm for 3 around with the EOS 5D and the 360P....

how did that turnout? did you manage to change the bayonet or adapter in the end? your test images don't seem to do justice to this fine rock (I disagree with Andrei on this one)

in a

I did not take testing and adapter hunting any further. The 16mm is lying around somewhere..... I don't see any big advantages at the moment

The Zeiss has some flair, the Sig not.......
But now there is more than the choice between a 10,5 nik and a 15mm Can/Sig. or 16 Zeiss.
Tokina/Pentax made a good fish 10-17. zooooooooooooom.......
And when you have a mechanic topper around, he could shave it for use on the 5D.
And then you have a 10-12,5-15-17mm fish. without the silly adapters.
(Canon mount)
Great !
Have fun,
Frank
